Cast by @vbuterin abt “politeness” reminds me of the Greek city (“polis”). A city needs a specific size:


1. Big enough that it can defend itself (unlike a village)

2. Small enough that citizens can potentially know each other (unlike an empire)

Politeness is the rational and desirable behavior of members of a polis — ie, people with a common goal who expect to play an iterative game together, with accountability!

What do people think of the idea that Farcaster might be *too polite*? Like, people love to rail against the toxicity of twitter, but ultimately it's a PvP MMORPG and lots of people really enjoy the PvP - if not participating, then at least seeing some fireworks in the background...

It‘s simply oversaturated with bait, dense, worst assuming exchanges and a lot of bitterness. That‘s not a pvp i enjoy to involve myself in.

Not worth the fireworks if a stranger is shouting in the same ear you triyng to listen to the conversation to.

Twitter often feels like toddlers fighting over toys in preschool whereas Warpcast feels like adolescents participating in the Harkness method at high school.

no, I think u shouldn‘t say this. The kindness here is nice and it is like a refugium. It‘s much harder here to be mean to others (u won‘t get likes), e.g. to criticize u can crack a joke or make a meme about the issue and ultimately that‘ll have more impact than straight up venting out the PvP anger.

@vbuterin but @syed suggested to put ⚔️ in your name if you‘re open for PvP style discussions here. Might be worth trying

Some people like PvP, and some prefer PvE. I think there should be room for both

Also, the PvP changes UX.

Twitter Reality Show is interesting to watch, but most people don't want to take part in it. That's why Musk is so frustrated with low number of comments.

PvE is less entertaining but has better engagement since people are less worried about dunks.

as @dwr has pointed out a few times is that someone could build a client that gates for FID so that anyone who loves Farcaster in its current state could essentially freezes Farcaster in time (right now for example) to preserve those vibes.

While that's true the problem is that's just a view, the other posts still exist and can cause harm/destroy the vibes.

not necessarily - think of it as a text group chat. one can create a client where only posts from say FID 5000 are allowed.

I feel like we need a social norm that raises the quality bar for April Fools posts. Remove the sense of *obligation* to say something funny on Apr 1, replace it with "if you have something particularly clever, do it and really put effort into it, otherwise wait for next year"

Farcaster is cozy 🤗 and full of brilliant builders.

BUT

Farcaster needs evangelists to grow.

It may not be the instinct of builders to proselytize but I'd challenge everyone active here to spread the word on Twitter, Lens etc. 

Expand beyond the insular bubble

Memes, images, invitations, whatever feels natural!

It needs to lift the invites. I got 28k followers on LinkedIn willing to move but can't bring em over due to the cap.

My 🌶️ take is that 

a) you're right - Twitter shillers are obnoxious 

but 

b) there can be an overcorrection where great products are being built but no one uses them because there aren't enough users/shillers/hype people so that people can find them.

Absolutely right, I am not a builder. I am a crypto power user and guy interested in finance and politics.

At the start of using web3 apps, the hardest thing for me was to find the right community and people. Because youtube videos and people with the most viewers and followers are not the most suitable choice.

I'm like you in a way but fwiw with AI/Chatgpt  crypto power users have never been in a better position to become builders/contributors so perhaps it's...

True. The lens airdrop hype has certainly helped amplify its awareness - just look at # of casters who talked about getting non-trivial offers on their Lens NFTs.

On a related topic, I've been struggling to send out invites to people who I think would appreciate FC. Posting more on bird should prob help

I feel the struggle re sending out invites. 

I essentially rebranded and hit the reset button on Twitter when I decided to focus my web3 presence on art rather than as a speculator. 

This was around the time I joined Farcaster and as a result I don't have a large Twitter network to leverage.

I don't either. Never posted that much on Twitter.

Re. invites, I think FC has yet to find the top of its growth funnel. The average web3 people I talk to simply have no idea what FC is, so hard to convince them to jump ship. (@dwr recently talked about trying to recruit college users & DAOs, so let's hope it works.)

I did too, and I can certainly post more over there as well.

One thing I've noticed about Lens, (which I don't hold in super high regard atm) is that - partly due to incentives - there's massive Twitter chatter and thus more hype. 

Hype isn't bad when you're building something as cool as FC.

I'm really split because I love what the community is currently. It feels like a big group chat once you follow enough people and I want to share that amazing experience with people. 

But as the community grows you will face all the same problems of spam and abuse social networks fall prey too.

Imo politeness is certainly a feature.

I've almost stopped posting on Twitter all together now that most of my time is spend here. But this reminds me we need to continue proliferating wherever the audience is
